Box Score

MIAMI ? Two goals by senior Janet Liguori led the FIU women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon for its first victory of the 2005 season. After opening the season with a pair of ties, FIU (1-0-2) dominated Jacksonville State (0-2-1) with a 17-6 advantage in shots, including 11 on goal. With an aggressive offensive game and a stingy defensive effort that allowed only six shots, the Golden Panthers were in control for the match.

The Golden Panthers attacked in the Jacksonville State half of the field for the opening 45 minutes, holding the visiting Gamecocks to one shot over the final 21 minutes. Early opportunities by FIU forwards Janessa Taddei and Liguori were bottled up by a collapsing JSU defense. Liguori ended a 149:17 scoreless drought for the Golden Panthers when she found the back of the net in the 21st minute. She dribbled her way through the JSU defense and managed to fire a shot that hit the lower right post and into the back of the net. With a 1-0 advantage, FIU added to its lead when Taddei beat JSU goalkeeper Amanda Stephens to the upper right side of the box in the 25th minute. The goal by Taddei gives her 16 career goals in her three-plus years at FIU, moving into 10th place all-time.

Holding a 2-0 advantage, FIU looked to extend the margin before being called for offsides on four-straight possessions. The two goal margin prompted a change at goalkeeper for JSU at the halftime break. The Golden Panthers continued to challenge JSU and its defense for the remainder of the contest. Senior Tamara Kochen posted back-to-back shots in the 56th and 58th minutes that were saved by the new JSU goalkeeper Kate Kelly. In the 88th minute, Liguori added her second goal of the match when she beat Kelly with a shot along the bottom right side of the goal to give a 3-0 lead. It is the first multi-goal game in the career for the senior forward from Mississauga, Ontario.

For FIU, junior transfer goalkeeper Laura Snell posted her second-straight shutout, making three saves in 90 minutes of action. Snell and the Golden Panther defense have not allowed a goal in the last 223:02.

Next up for the Golden Panthers is the College of Charleston Classic, starting on Friday at 5 p.m. against Wofford.
