Men's Soccer Blanks Milwaukee 1-0

MIAMI - Freshman Christian Caporaletti (Miami, Fla./American) scored the lone goal of the match in the 30th minute to lift the Florida International men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Milwaukee, Saturday evening at University Park.

The win is the fourth in the past five matches for the Golden Panthers (4-3-2), who also are unbeaten in six of the past seven.  The UWM Panthers, who were ranked in the preseason, fall to 3-6-1 on the year.

There were not many chances in the first half, and yet Caporaletti made the most of his opportunity.  Sophomore Cory Kendall (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) took the space and dribbled from the back before passing to junior Edgard Correa (Sao Paolo, Brazil).  Correa then sent Capoaraletti into the box with a fine pass which he took and shot high past the goalkeeper on the right side of the goal from 10 yards out for his second tally of the season.

The second half was much more open as each team created solid scoring opportunities.

Steve Sperl took a low shot in the 50th minute from just outside the 18 yard box toward the left corner of goal which was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Thomas (Jensen Beach, Fla.), who had come into the match at halftime.

Five minutes later, freshman Sina Ebrahimi (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas) won the ball from a Panther defender along the right side of the field, dribbled and then tested Milwaukee goalkeeper Grant Fernstrum with a 40-yard blast that had to be tipped over the bar.

The Panthers again tested Thomas, this time with a free kick in the 60th minute.  Troy Spielmann took the kick from 20 yards out which was earmarked for the upper right corner before Thomas came over to deflect the ball away.

Directly after the ensuing corner kick, senior David Hope (North Tyneside, England) forced a save on the other end although he wasn't given much space by the Panther defenders from just beyond the penalty area.  Caporaletti attempted to run in for the follow up but could not get the ball under control.

The Golden Panthers had two more chances to grab an insurance goal.  First in the 74th minute, senior defender Chris Handy (Austin, Texas) fired a 25-yard shot which forced a rebound out of Fernstrum, but the Milwaukee defense was able to clear the ball.

In the 79th minute, Kendall made some nice work along the right edge of the penalty area to get a cross off for sophomore Levi Coleman (Broken Arrow, Okla.) who was at the far post, but the forward could not get a foot on the ball.

The best chance of the match for the Panthers to equalize came in the 82nd minute after some buildup down the left side between Craig Mallace and Martin Castro.  Castro then centered the ball to Sperl at the top of the penalty area, who then left it Adam Skalecki with plenty of space on the right side of the goal, but his shot went wide of the near post.

Senior Shawn Crowe (Aurora, Colo.) and Thomas combined for the shutout for FIU, the team's third in the last four matches, with two saves each.  Fernstrum made a game-high four stops for Milwaukee.

The Golden Panthers will be back in action when they open their Conference USA schedule at home against No. 3 SMU Friday night at 7 p.m.
