Men's Soccer Falls to No. 14 UConn

FIU's men soccer team (0-3-1) dropped a 1-0 decision to 14th ranked UConn (4-0-0), Saturday night at the UConn/adidas Classic.

After holding off an offensive onslaught by the Huskies that included 25 shots, FIU's defense finally faltered as they allowed the winning goal with just nine seconds remaining in regulation.

UConn's Akeem Priestley took a pass from Ryan Cordeiro and managed to get a shot past the FIU defense en route to giving UConn their fourth win in as many games this season.

Even though they were out-shot 25-4, FIU's defense, and the Golden Panther goalkeeper Kyle Thomas (Jensen Beach, Fla.) held strong once again. However the Huskies' pressure was too much to hold off for 90 minutes.

The loss marks the third time this season the FIU offense has been held scoreless. FIU took the first shot of the match, but UConn would dominate the rest of the way. The offensive barrage included an 11-1 edge in corner kicks for the Huskies.

Through it all, Kyle Thomas and the FIU defense held strong. Thomas tallied five saves on the night.

This was UConn head coach Ray Reid's 150th career win.

Next up for FIU is a trip to Ann Arbor next weekend for the Michigan invitational. The Golden Panthers will face the Spartans of Michigan State on Friday at 5 p.m., and then take on the host Wolverines of Michigan on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
