The Golden Panthers again failed in their effort to pick up the first win of
the season as they battled the Crusaders to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon at
University Park.
In the 28th minute, Cesar DeOliveira took what looked like an open shot from
just inside the box, but at the last minute a Crusader defender stepped in to
block the shot and end the scoring threat.
Brian Carvajal nearly gave FIU a lead in the 36th minute when he took a long,
dangerous shot from outside the box. The ball was heading for the back of the
net before Holy Cross keeper Thomas Booth made the save and sent the ball over
the crossbar.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute on a goal by Jonathan Werth.
After a long run down the left sideline, Werth beat an FIU defender to get into
the box an took a low shot into the bottom right corner of the net for his
second score of the season.
Miami product Alejandro Melean almost made it a 2-0 game in the 56th minute
when he headed a ball of a corner kick but was denied by FIU keeper Jesse
Fullerton.
Christian Caporaletti had a chance to tie the score in the 67th minute when
he took a free kick from just outside the box, however, just like on FIU's
previous scoring threat, the Holy Cross keeper sent the ball flying over the net
to preserve the lead.
With 2:02 left in regulation, Marcos Balladares scored his second goal
of the season to tie the score at one. Juan Guerra set up the goal by beating a
defender on the right side before finding Balladares on the left side of the box
for the goal that sent the match into overtime.
With just a few seconds remaining in the second overtime, Holy Cross nearly
won it on a dangerous header by Kyle Miller. However, the shot sailed high and
the match ended in a tie.
The tie puts FIU's record at 0-5-2. The Golden Panthers will now travel to
Ft. Myers to face Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, September 28 at 7
p.m.a
