MIAMI (Jan. 26, 2011) --- The FIU women's tennis team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season, downing Sun Belt rival Florida Atlantic, 6-1, on Wednesday, Jan. 26.
The match marked the home opener for the Panthers, who improved to 24-1 all-time over the Owls.
FIU jumped out to a 5-0 lead, following five-straight singles victories. Senior Liset Brito picked up the Panther's first point of the contest, defeating Erika Mrazkova, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Rita Maisak made the score 2-0 following a 6-0, 6-0 win over Virginia Augustin. Junior Christine Seredni improved to 2-0 on the season in dual matches with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Marlene Ryan. Freshman Giulietta Boha won her second-straight dual match, defeating Natasha Phillips, 2-6, 6-1, 10-5. Junior Lisa Johnson made the score 5-0 with a three-set victory over Natasha Basma, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. FAU got on the board with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 victory for Cassie Bergeson over Maria Spenceley.
In doubles action, FIU took two of three matches to wrap up the scoring, 6-1. The duo of Brito and Spenceley shut out Augustin and Mrazkova, 8-0, while Maisak and Johnson defeated Phillips and Basma, 8-6.
The victory improved Head Coach Melissa Applebaum Dall'au's career record to 34-15 and to 3-0 versus FAU.
The Panthers will next travel to Coral Gables, Fla., to take on the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, Jan. 29. The match is slated for 2:00 p.m.
