FIU Comes up Short in OT Loss to SMU

DALLAS (Oct. 16, 2011) – The FIU men's soccer team lost a tough contest to the SMU Mustangs by a 2-1 score in overtime on Sunday evening in Dallas, Texas. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 4-6-3, and 1-3-1 in Conference USA action while the Mustangs stand at 8-4-1 and 3-1-1 in C-USA play.

The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead when, in the 30th minute of the match, freshman Quentin Albrecht beat the SMU keeper one-on-one for his fifth score of the season. Freshman Roberto De Sousa was credited with the assist.

 

The Mustangs scored the equalizer in the 60th minute of the match when Juan Castillo beat FIU keeper Rodney Greiling for the match-tying goal.

 

Three minutes into the overtime period, SMU's Diogo de Almeida sealed the victory for the Mustangs when he collected a rebound off the freshman Greiling and scored from eight yards out for the game-winner.

 

Greiling finished the match with three saves while the Panthers as a whole took nine shots; two on goal.

 

FIU will continue its two-match road trip on Wednesday when it takes on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in Tulsa, Okla. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
