FIU Falls in Overtime to Louisiana, 87-81

MIAMI (Jan.14, 2012) --- The FIU men's basketball team (4-13, 1-4 SBC) fell to the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (9-10, 3-2 SBC), 87-81, in overtime on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Cajundome in Lafayette, La. Trailing by as many as 11 points, the Panthers battled back to send the game to overtime as junior Brandon Moore laid in the game-tying bucket with 00:06 left in the game.

In overtime, the Ragin' Cajuns out-scored the Panthers, 19-13, to hand FIU its third-straight loss.

The Panthers were led by senior Jeremy Allen, who posted 22 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor. Also scoring in double-figures were sophomores Phil Taylor (19 points) and Dominique Ferguson (10 points). Ferguson also led FIU in rebounding, grabbing seven boards. Freshman Gilles Dierickx registered a career-high eight points, shooting a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor. Freshman Deric Hill scored a career-best seven points, including five points in overtime. Hill also led FIU is assists with three.  Moore finished the night with six points and a team-high two blocked shots.

For the game, FIU shot 42.1 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from 3-point range. The Panthers converted 75.8 percent from the free-throw line (25-of-33). FIU scored 11 points off of 13 Louisiana turnovers.

Louisiana shot 44.4 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from beyond the arc. The Ragin' Cajuns drained 54.7 percent of its shots from the charity stripe, taking 20 more attempts than the Panther s (29-of-53). UL won the rebounding battle, 41-36, including a 16-11 advantage on the offensive boards. The Ragin' Cajuns scored 24 second-chance points and converted 18 points off of 12 FIU turnovers.  Louisiana also recorded 12 blocked shots, including seven by Kadeem Coleby.

Darshawn MClellan led the scoring for Louisiana with 28 points, while Josh Brown registered the game's only double-double, scoring 23 points and registering 10 rebounds.

The loss is the third-straight for the Panthers to the Ragin' Cajuns.    

FIU will next travel to Mobile, Ala., to take on South Alabama Jaguars on Thursday, Jan. 19. Game time is 8:05 p.m. ET.
