Last-Second Bucket Hands FIU 66-64 Loss to Middle Tennessee

Box Score MIAMI (Jan. 31, 2013) – A layup by Middle Tennessee's Shawn Jones as time expired handed the FIU men's basketball team (11-10, 6-6 SBC) a 66-64 loss to the Blue Raiders (19-4, 11-1 SBC) on Thursday night at U.S. Century Bank Arena.
 
With the game tied at 64-64 and 0.9 seconds on the clock, MT's Bruce Massey lobbed an out-of-bounds pass from underneath the basket to Jones in the paint for the game-winner. The loss snapped a five-game, home-winning streak for the Panthers and resulted in FIU's second-straight conference defeat.
 
FIU, which led by as many as 20 points, finished the game shooting 42.6 percent from the floor (23-of-54) and was led by junior Tymell Murphy who posted a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native went 8-of-13 from the floor, while recording his seventh double-double of the season.
 
Redshirt sophomore Marco Porcher Jimenez notched a career-high 15 points, draining a career-best four 3-pointers, while junior Malik Smith added 11 points for his 17th game with 10-or-more points this season.
 
The Panthers built a 17-point lead heading to halftime, holding the Blue Raiders to 26.9 percent shooting from the floor (7-of-26). However, Middle Tennessee out-shot FIU 63.0 percent to 37.5 percent in the second half to give the Blue Raiders their 19th victory of the season.
 
FIU held a 28-26 edge in points-in-the-paint and forced 19 Middle Tennessee turnovers, resulting in 29 Panther points. The Blue Raiders out-rebounded FIU, 39-30, while the Panthers held a 10-9 advantage in second-chance points. 
 
FIU will next host the ULM Warhawks at U.S. Century Bank Arena on Saturday, Feb. 2. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
