Panthers Win Seven Events in Meet Against FGCU

The FIU swimming and diving team won seven events against Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday at the Biscayne Bay Aquatics in Miami. The Eagles, however, defeated the Panthers 168-130.

"Today's meet was a good measuring stick to see where we are as a program," FIU swimming and diving head coach Randy Horner said. "Gulf Coast is a very good program and they outswam us today, but not by much. Our ladies battled and swam pretty good but lost too many close races to win the meet."

Sonia Perez (photo above) won two events on Saturday. Perez won the 1000 free and the 200 back. In the 1000 free, Perez recorded the second fastest time for FIU this season with a 10:17.47. Perez owns the fastest time in the 1000 free with a 10:11.36 against Nova Southeastern. On Saturday in the 200 back, Perez posted a time of 2:02.46.

Reigning Sun Belt Diver of the Week Sabrina Beaupre won both of the diving events. Beaupre recorded a season-high score in the 1-meter dive with a 294.90, which topped Beaupre's 292.55 against Florida State and Florida Atlantic. In the 3-meter dive, Beaupre scored the second-highest amount of points on the team this season with a 289.35. Beaupre holds the high mark in the 3-meter with a 293.50 at the Mizzou Invitational.

Danielle Albright won the 200 free with a time of 1:53.18, which gave Albright the second fastest time in the event this season. Albright swam a 1:51.67 at the Mizzou Invite.

Marina Ribi placed first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.63 – the second fastest in the event for FIU this season. Ribi also holds the fastest time with a 2:00.31 at the Mizzou Invite. Ribi also recorded the second fastest time on the team in the 100 fly on Saturday. Ribi finished second in the event with a mark of 57.10.
