HUNTINGTON, W.V. (Oct. 25, 2014) — Sophomore defender
Marvin Hezel's lone goal of the match in the 55th minute helped the FIU men's soccer team (5-7-1, 1-4-0) defeat the Marshall Thundering Herd, 1-0, on Saturday morning.
Ten minutes into the second half, an initial shot by senior
Quentin Albrecht rebounded back into play after the Herd's keeper dove for the save. Hezel collected the rebound and one-timed the ball past Bijan Gloston for the only score needed. With the assist, Albrecht moves into 10th place all-time in program history with 64 points, one point shy of a two-way tie for ninth.
A heavily offensive game for the Panthers, FIU was a constant force in the Herd's defensive third in the first half. Outshooting Marshall 7-1 in the through the first 45 minutes, junior
Robin Spiegel didn't see his first test of the day until the final minute before halftime. Senior
Sean McFarlanemissed wide in the 16th minute for the game's first look. From there, redshirt freshman
Darren Rios sent a chance towards net that Gloston was able to save in the 20th minute.
Albrect got off his first of two looks of the stanza off the 25th minute, sending a hard-kicked ball towards target, after redshirt freshman
Donald Tomlinson also tested Gloston's range in the 21st minute on a ball hit to the right side of the net.
Albrect's header just missed the back half of the net in the 30th minute, while senior
Roberto Alterio and Tomlinson each had good opportunities in the half's final five minutes.
The Panthers used two corners in the opening minutes of the second frame to set the tone, before an FIU defender stepped into a Marshall shot in the 50th minute, blocking it before it could find Spiegel. With 13 created opportunities in the second half alone, FIU's suffocating offense was able to keep the Herd at bay and allowed them just three chances in the final 45 minutes.
Three-straight shots for the Panthers eventually broke down Marshall's defense. On the final shot of the sequence that spanned two minutes, Albrect fired in a ball that rebounded back into play, eventually finding Hezel for the easy score.
Albrect kept looking for an insurance goal, setting off four additional looks in the final 35 minutes of the match. He finished the game with a season-high eight shots, one off his career-high set in 2012. Alterio also helped to pace the Panthers with five shots in the contest.
FIU is back in action this Wednesday at the FIU Soccer Stadium, hosting Florida Atlantic at 7:30 p.m.
