MIAMI (Oct. 8, 2014) – The FIU men's soccer team (3-6-1, 0-3-0) dropped a heartbreaker to the South Carolina Gamecocks in a 5-4 loss on Wednesday night. With three seconds remaining in regulation, South Carolina's Ryan Arambula scored to give the Gamecocks the victory.
The first shot of the contest resulted in a goal for the Gamecocks. The score came in the 11
th minute when Mikkel Knudsen tallied his second goal of the season. The unassisted goal was scored on a shot from the top of the 18-yard box.
The Panthers answered quickly. Nearly six minutes after the Gamecock goal, senior
Quentin Albrecht knotted things up at one with his sixth goal of the season. Senior
Roberto Alterio played a nice through ball into the box and found Albrecht, who struck the far post side netting.
FIU came out in the second half with the upper hand. Senior
Sean McFarlane scored his first of the season to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead in the 48
th minute. McFarlane's goal was unassisted, as he buried it far post, upper 90's to give FIU a 2-1 advantage.
The Panthers held the one-goal lead for 20 minutes until things began to pick up. Jeffrey Torda for South Carolina got his foot on a ball, battling through traffic in front of the net to tie the game up at two. Over three minutes later, the Gamecocks took their second lead of the night on a goal from Mahamoudou Kaba.
FIU responded less than five minutes after, as junior
Daniel Gonzalez netted his first goal of the season. Sophomore
Deshawon Nembhard crossed a ball to the far post and found Gonzalez, who finished it off and knotted the match up at three. Alterio then regained the lead for the Panthers over two minutes later, scoring his first goal of the season on a rebound off Gonzalez's shot, which was saved by the keeper. FIU had a 4-3 lead with less than 12 minutes to go.
Arambula scored his first of the final two goals in the 81
st minute on an easy ball that was misplayed by the FIU defense. Arambula tapped it in for the score to tie it up at four, before scoring the winner with three seconds to go.
FIU next travels to Charlotte this Saturday at 7 p.m.
