Volleyball Closes Regular Season with a Four-Set Win over Louisiana Tech on Senior Day

Lucia Castro picks up 919th career kill; ranks No. 9 in FIU career-kills record books

MIAMI (Nov. 16, 2014)
- The FIU volleyball team wrapped up its 2014 season with a 3-1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-13, 25-20) Conference USA win over the Louisiana Tech Lady Tecshters on Sunday afternoon from the FIU Arena. The Panthers capped off the 2014 season with a 7-23 overall record and a 4-12 mark in C-USA play, finishing 9th in the conference standings. The Lady Techsters finish the season 9-21 overall and 1-15 in conference play.
 
Before the start of the match, FIU recognized current seniors Martyna Gluchowicz, Tina Toghiyani and Kristine Monforte in a pre-match ceremony.
 
On Senior Day it was a junior that stood out for the Panthers, as Lucia Castro posted a match-high tying 18 kills to garner 919 kills in her career which now ranks at No. 9 in FIU's all-time record books. She finished the season on an offensive tear as she had seven-consecutive double-digit kill matches. Castro also garnered eight digs and a block on the day.
 
Jennifer Ene had another typical match, finishing the day with eight kills, a .350 hitting percentage and six blocks (two solo, four assisted). Gluchowicz and Toghiyani had a senior day to remember Gluchowicz had nine kills, a .300 hitting percentage, 11 digs and two aces, and Toghiyani finished with a career-high 20 digs. Junior Gloria Levorin and freshman Lea Montavon contributed eight kills each with a combined for a .300 hitting clip.
 
Louisiana Tech had two players reach double-figures in kills as Rebecca Redgen and Angela Papach had 18 and 10, respectively. Alejandra Aviles and Adria Morales had double-digit dig figures with 18 and 12, respectively.
 
With the score tied five times in the first, FIU eventually used a 6-1 run to take a commanding 12-7 lead in the opening set. The Panthers would extend their lead to 19-10, before Tech went on a 4-1 run to close the deficit back to six points; however, FIU quickly regrouped taking the frame, 25-16.
 
FIU fell behind 9-6 to open the second set before posting a 3-0 run to tie the frame at 9-9. From there, the set would swing back-and-forth featuring 13 ties and seven lead changes. After hitting over .440 in the first set, the Panthers hit less than .115 in the second with eight attack errors as they fell in a close 26-24 second set.
FIU came out of the intermission on fire as it combined to hit .294 percent in set three and set four. Castro posted six of her 18 kills in the fourth set with a .600 percent hitting clip and no attack errors. The Panthers also had 7.0 of their 8.0 total team blocks in the two latter sets and limited the Lady Techsters to a combined .093 hitting percentage. FIU eventually took the match, 3-1, after a 25-13 win in the third and a 25-20 victory in the fourth.
