MIAMI (April 17, 2015) – The FIU football team held its annual Spring Game on Friday, April 17 from Ocean Bank Field at FIU Stadium, to close out spring practice.
The 15
th and final practice of the spring pitted the offense versus the defense, with the offense defeating the defense, 34-22. The game consisted of a scoring system where the offense received points for scores as well as consecutive first downs and big plays (passing of 20-or-more yards and rushing of 10-or-more yards), while 3-and-outs, turnovers and holding the offense from scoring gave the defense points.
The offensive side of the ball was led by wide receiver
Shawn Abrams, who grabbed four catches for a game-high 84 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown reception from quarterback
Bud Martin. Martin went 10-of-21 for 101 yards and two touchdowns on the evening. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native also connected with wide out
Thomas Owens for a 1-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter.
Alex McGough finished the evening 10-of-17 for 82 yards and a touchdown. The Tampa, Fla., native completed a 3-yard touchdown pass to
Ya'Keem Griner in the second quarter. On the ground
Napoleon Maxwell rushed for 23 yards on four carries, while
Alex Gardner added 19 yards on four carries.
On defense, the Panthers were anchored by linebacker
Fred Russ, who posted a game-high six tackles. Cornerback
Mark Bruno had five, including an interception. Linebacker
Jordan Guest also registered a pick.
