MIAMI (May 29, 2015) – Three errors in the first two innings led to six Miami runs as the FIU baseball team (29-30) fell to the No. 8-ranked Miami Hurricanes (45-14), 6-2, in the opening round of the 2015 Coral Gables Regional on Friday night.
Five Panthers registered hits on the night, including junior
Edwin Rios and freshman
Eddie Silva, who each recorded two knocks on the night. Rios went 2-for-4, while Silva was 2-for-2 with a walk from the plate. Junior
Zack Soria went 1-for-4 with an RBI and senior
Julius Gaines drove in the Panthers' second run.
Freshman
Andres Nunez (6-6) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in six and one-third innings of action. The right-hander struck out four on the night.
The Panthers fell behind early as the Hurricanes scored four runs in the bottom of the first. UM scored four runs on two hits and two FIU errors in the inning.
The Hurricanes added two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-0 lead.
In the top of the eighth, the Panthers scored two runs as Soria and Gaines each drove in runs with the bases loaded as junior
Austin Rodriguez and freshman
Jack Schaaf crossed the plate. However, FIU could not make up the remaining four-run deficit, falling to the Hurricanes, 6-2.
FIU will face East Carolina in an elimination game on Saturday, May 30. Right-hander
Chris Mourelle will take the mound for the Panthers and will face the Pirates' Reid Love. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET as the game will air on ESPN3.
