MIAMI (October 30, 2016) -- After nearly four full days of rain, the FIU Soccer Stadium turf had all it could handle, but the rains continued to come Sunday as the Panthers succumbed to Old Dominion by a 1-0 final to conclude the regular season. FIU finishes the year at 3-11-3 overall, 2-6-2 in Conference USA. By virtue of the win, ODU claims the final spot in the C-USA Championships this week in Charlotte. The Monarchs are 11-7 overall, and 5-5 in C-USA.
Â
The lone score of the game was an own goal by FIU right on the 39-minute mark. After a collision in front of the goal with an ODU forward and FIU senior keeper
Sophia Trujillo (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep), the ball came loose in front of the net. In an attempt to clear it, the Panthers kicked it off of Trujillo and into goal. It was the only time the ball found a net in the game.
Â
Trujillo had four saves, while facing 10 ODU shots. The Monarchs put together nine corner kicks, including two groups of three in a row, to FIU's three.
Â
Trujillo finished her career with the ninth-most saves by a keeper in program history, with 118.
Â
"It was a crazy way to create a game-winner, but the team fought hard," said FIU Head Coach
Thomas Chestnutt. "We gave ourselves chances and I felt like we really limited Old Dominion to only a couple of chances on corner kicks. To have the difference be that goal was certainly heartbreaking for our seniors and the whole team. I was proud of the way this team has played and battled this year. It's a good group and they should hold their heads up. All the best to ODU in the tournament."
Â
After the game, the program honored its three outgoing seniors, with Trujillo joined by
Alyssa Robinson (Pembroke Pines, Florida / American Heritage HS) and
Pat Tomanon (Davie, Florida / Western HS)
Â
"I want to especially thank the seniors for their efforts this year and in all of their years here. It's been great to watch them grow and mature and I look forward to seeing them as alumnae return to us."
