Trailing heading into the bottom of the seventh inning against Marshall on Thursday night, FIU had just four hits and got just one hit in the seventh. However, thanks in part to five walks and one Thundering Herd error in the seventh the Panthers scored four times to propel them to a 10-5 win.
Marshall (11-9, 1-3 Conference USA) used seven pitchers, who walked 11 Panthers and threw four wild pitches to help FIU (12-13, 2-2 C-USA) to a win in the opener of a three-game series from the FIU ballpark.
FIU scored the tying run in the seventh when
Austin Rodriguez, who had a bloop single off Patrick Murphy (2-1) to lead off the inning, scored on a wild pitch by Heston Van Fleet to make it 4-4.
Kenny Meimerstorf, who had one of the five FIU walks in the seventh, scored the go-ahead run when Marshall second baseman Aaron Bossi booted a ground ball that would have ended the inning with a tie score.
The Panthers added two more insurance runs in the seventh after Herd left-hander Caleb Ross twice walked in runs with the bases loaded.
Irving Lopez and
Eddie Silva each drew a walk with the sacks full. The Panthers led 7-4 after seven innings.
FIU added three more runs in the eighth helped by three more walks and RBI singles by
Jack Schaaf and Silva.
Nick Day had a sacrifice fly RBI as well.
Marshall used six pitchers in the seventh and eighth innings.
Zach Files was 2 for 4. Silva was 2 for 3 with two RBI and
Zack Soria was 1 for 4 with a two-run double in the first inning.
FIU left-hander
Alex Demchak (3-0) got the win, pitching two innings of relief after starter
Andres Nunez allowed three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Cody Crouse recorded his first career save with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
The series continues Friday night at 6:30 p.m. as FIU right-hander
Chris Mourelle takes on Marshall left-hander J.D. Hammer.
The game can be heard on the FIU Sports Radio Network.
