Niko Decolati's RBI double in the top of the 12
th inning scored Brandon Shearer with the go-ahead run as Loyola Marymount outlasted FIU 5-4 in a five-hour and five-minute 12-inning marathon at the FIU ballpark Friday night.
FIU reliever
Williams Durruthy (0-1) walked Shearer with one out in the 12
th. Billy Wilson followed and leaned into a fastball to reach first base.
Michael Agis relieved and yielded the go-ahead hit to Decolati.
FIU (4-6) got a single from
Nick Day in the bottom of the 12
th with two outs but couldn't do much more against Harrison Simon (1-0) who retired four of the five batters he faced to end the game.
After the teams traded two runs each in the first inning, the Lions (4-5) went ahead in the top of the sixth inning against FIU starter
Andres Nunez. Ted Boeke led off the inning with a double and Billy Wilson reached after a wild pitch on strike three. Decolati drove them both home with a triple to the right center field gap for a 4-2 lead.
Nunez went 5 1/3 innings, allowed nine hits, four runs, walked two and struck out three. LMU starter J.D. Busfield went six innings, allowed 10 hits, two runs, one walk and struck out eight.
Irving Lopez singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. Two strikeouts later FIU rallied to tie the score in the ninth.
JC Escarra doubled home Lopez to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Austin Rodriguez singled to center to score Escarra with the tying run.
Each team had chances to end the game before the 12
th but baserunners were left on base by both sides. LMU stranded 16 runners. FIU left 14 men on base.
Rodriguez was 3 for 5 with two RBI.
Kolby Follis went 3 for 6 to remain at .500 and keep leading the team in hitting. Escarra was 2 for 5 with two doubles and two RBI.
The teams resume the four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader. The first of two games begins at 2 p.m. and can be seen on PantherVision and heard on the FIU Sports Radio Network.
