Loyola Marymount used a four-run seventh inning to snap a tie and defeat FIU, 8-4, Sunday afternoon at the FIU ballpark. The Lions (6-6) won the weekend series by taking three of four games from the Panthers (5-8).
LMU leadoff batter Austin Miller started the seventh by homering off
Nate Pearson (1-1) to break a 1-1 tie. The Lions collected three doubles in the seventh and a single to tack on three more runs and lead the Panthers 5-1. LMU had 15 hits Sunday and 47 hits in the four-game series.
LMU added three more runs in the ninth helped by three walks, two stolen bases and a balk. The Lions had just one hit in the final inning.
FIU got a strong start from
Cody Crouse, who went 5 1/3 innings, allowed no earned runs and struck out six batters.
LMU broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth. Seaver Whalen led off with a single to left off Crouse, moved to second on an errant pickoff throw and scored on the RBI single by Sean Watkins.
FIU answered in the bottom of the sixth,
Kolby Follis led off with a double into the left field corner.
Jack Schaaf moved Follis to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Austin Rodriguez drove Follis home with a ground out to shortstop.
However, the Panthers couldn't muster much more offense Sunday against LMU starter Tyler Cohen (1-1), who limited FIU to five hits and a run through six innings.

Zack Soria was 3 for 3 and
JC Escarra (2 for 3) was the only other Panther with more than one hit on the day.
The Panthers got three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning helped by two errors by LMU third baseman Ted Boeke.
FIU continues its season-long 16-game home stand Tuesday with a single-game against Stetson at 6 p.m. The game can be seen on PantherVision and heard on the FIU Sports Radio Network.
