Bethune-Cookman Comes Back in 7th on @FIUSoftball, 4-3

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 13, 2016) -- A bases-loaded, two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh was enough to give Bethune-Cookman a walk off win over FIU in game one of a Wednesday doubleheader 4-3 at Sunnyland Park. The win snaps a six-game losing streak for the Wildcats against the Panthers, pushing the B-CU record to 12-26. FIU is now 21-21 overall, with one more game this afternoon.

Trailing 3-2 into the last inning, the Wildcats got a leadoff single before two outs were recorded. A single and a hit batter loaded the bases before the two-RBI single from catcher Melissa Berouty ended the game.

The Wildcats threatened to score first with three hits in the second, but a solid throw from center fielder Gabby Spallone (Miami, Florida / Palmetto HS) resulted in an out at the plate to preserve the scoreless start.

In the next half, FIU got the lead it would hold until the end with three runs on five hits. With one out, senior catcher Aleima Lopez (Deltona, Florida / Deltona HS) doubled down the line past the third baseman to start the offense. The double was the 29th of her career, pulling her into ninth all-time in career doubles at FIU. The next three Panthers collected hits, with an RBI double coming from second baseman Ashley Leon (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep / Auburn University) and two more runs driven in on a single from junior first baseman Stephanie Texeira (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep). Texeira leads the team with 36 RBI this season.

The Wildcats scored their first run after the leadoff batter of the third inning was hit by a pitch and advanced with a one-out walk. A single to right drove in the runner from second for a 3-1 margin.

Lopez got her second hit of the game, to tie her season high, with a single in the fourth and Texeira added her second hit with a single to right in the fifth, but the score remained 3-1.

The Wildcats got the game to within a run in the fifth after a two-out error allowed an unearned run to come in making the score 3-2.

The Panthers got baserunners in every inning except the first, but stranded seven on base in the game.

Senior Corinne Jenkins (Sarasota, Florida / Riverview HS) took the loss after throwing her seventh complete game of the season(5-7). She was charged with three earned runs, giving up 10 hits, all singles, in the contest. She had four strikeouts and one walk.

The Wildcats win went to Sabrina Anguiano (6-12), who allowed nine hits in her complete-game effort. She walked one and did not record a strikeout.

Game two will begin at 4:25 p.m.
