Wednesday Split for @FIUSoftball Comes After 7-2 Win at B-CU

Game One Recap

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 13, 2016) --
FIU scored in five of the seven innings and ran away with the nightcap of a Wednesday doubleheader, 7-2 over host Bethune-Cookman at Sunnyland Park in Daytona.  The Panthers end the day 22-21 after splitting the twin bill, while the Wildcats finish 12-27.

After falling in the seventh, 4-3 in game one, the Panthers scored early and often in game two, grabbing the lead in the top of the first with two runs on two hits and a walk. Gabby Spallone (Miami, Florida / Palmetto HS) drove in Ashley Leon (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep / Auburn University) with an RBI single after Leon walked and stole second. A Dani Mowry (Cocoa, Florida / Space Coast HS) double to center field drove in Spallone from first with two outs to end the scoring.

A leadoff single ended up scoring for B-CU on an RBI groundout in the second for a 2-1 score after two innings.

Leon scored on a wild pitch in the third. In the fourth, sophomore shortstop A.J. Belans (Hollywood, Florida / American Heritage HS) walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming home on a two-out single by designated player Aleima Lopez (Deltona, Florida / Deltona HS), her third hit of the doubleheader.

The Panthers collected three hits in the sixth, scoring an unearned run. The Panthers plated two more unearned runs in the seventh on a dropped fly ball and a double steal attempt.

The Wildcats scored a run in the seventh after two walks and a double down the right field line.

Freshman Abby Summers (Weston, Missouri) came in to pitch 2.1 innings of relief and got her team-leading eighth win (8-6). She gave up a single and a walk, striking out one batter.

Summers was in relief of Rachel Dwyer (Tampa, Florida / Chamberlain HS / University of Virginia), who tossed 3.2 innings, giving up four hits and a walk, striking out one. She was charged with one run in the ballgame.

Diedra Genera took the loss for Bethune-Cookman.

The games were the start of an 11-game road swing for the Panthers. The road leads next to Birmingham and a conference weekend series at UAB, starting with a Saturday doubleheader at 2 p.m. Eastern.
