LOUISVILLE — Kade McClure limited FIU to four hits and struck out seven batters to lead No. 6 Louisville past the Panthers, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon at Patterson Stadium in Louisville.
After its second of five games this week FIU dropped to 20-23. Louisville is now 32-9.
The Cardinals got the only run McClure would need in the bottom of the third inning. Corey Ray, who is projected to be an early round Major League Baseball draft pick this summer, led off with a single. Ray then stole second base and advanced to third base after catcher
Zack Soria's throw sailed into center field. Two pitches later, Ray scored from third base on a wild pitch by FIU starter
Andres Nunez.
Louisville added three more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by Colin Lyman.
Nunez (3-3) went four innings, allowed four hits, two earned runs and walked three.
McClure (8-0) pitched seven shutout innings before giving way to the Cardinals bullpen. The Panthers managed one hit off of a trio of Cardinals relievers.
Soria, who started his collegiate career at Louisville, was 1 for 3 to increase his team-leading batting average to .333.
FIU next takes on Western Kentucky in a three-game series in Bowling Green, Ky. The Panthers and Hilltoppers open the series Friday and the game can be heard on the FIU Sports Radio Network.
