Â
The Basics
- After a difficult three-match road stretch, the FIU men's soccer team returned home to the FIU Soccer Stadium on Saturday, but the competition didn't get any easier. The Panthers took the pitch for a key Conference USA match against No. 24 New Mexico (UNM) and didn't seem to miss a beat, dominating the Lobos and handing them a 4-0 loss. FIU improves to 10-0-3 on the year and 5-0-1 in C-USA, while UNM drops to 8-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in league play. The win, which was the blue and gold's fourth clean sheet on the season, extend the Panthers unbeaten streak to 13 matches on the year joining No. 1 ranked Indiana who defeated Wisconsin, 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday night to improve to 13-0-3.
Â
- Saturday's match against the Lobos begins FIU's most daunting stretch of the season. Including tonight's contest, the Panthers will close out final three matches of the 2017 regular season campaign against three of the top five teams in the United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region Rankings: UNM (No. 2), Old Dominion (No. 3) and Kentucky (No. 5). FIU is ranked No. 1 in the region.Â
Â
-
Joris Ahlinvi (Gujan-Mestras, France) got the Panthers on the board first in the 23
rd-minute of play on a penalty kick after being taken down in the box. Ahlinvi set up and beat New Mexico goalkeeper, Jason Beaulieu, to the low left corner, for his fourth goal of the season.
Â
-
Matias Barraza (Miami, Florida/Doral Academy) nearly put the Panthers up 2-0, with a laser shot from the left side of the goal, and about 22 yards out, only to have Beaulieu make a spectacular diving save to his left and sending the ball off the post, keeping it a one-goal match in the 35
th-minute.
Â
- The Panthers headed into the intermission dominating offensively, outshooting the Lobos, 10-3, and 4-1 in shots on goal.
Â
- Barraza eventually beat Beaulieu, taking a pass from
Paul Marie (Saint Aubindes Bois, France/5th Ursule) in the 53
rd-minute and sending a chip shot to the far low corner over the keeper. It was Barraza's third goal of the year.
Â
- FIU goalkeeper
Hugo Fauroux (Cannes, France/Lycee Bristol), who finished the match with four saves, recorded possibly the biggest stop of the night in the 67
th-minute, when the Lobos' Aaron Scott fired his one shot on goal of the night seemingly beat Fauroux. The France native, however, made a diving save to his left to keep UNM off the board.
Â
- Marie, who assisted on the second goal of the game just 16 minutes before, capped a frantic play that was started by a big defensive play by
Alessandro Campoy (Miami, Florida/Immaculate-LaSalle). After Campoy cleanly picked a UNM player, who was trying to make a move past him, he crossed the ball and served up a streaking Marie who fired a shot that was saved by Beaulieu, collected his own rebound, and sent a shot over the keeper but below the crossbar to make the score 3-0 in the 70
th-minute. Â
Â
- Campoy found his way into the goal column, finishing the scoring for the night with a shot from 15 yards out that deflected off Beaulieu. Campoy, like Marie, collected his own rebound and found the back of the goal in the 79
th-minute.
Â
Stat of the Game
On the night, FIU showed no mercy, with a 21-8 shots advantage, including a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal. Of the 14 shots on goal, 10 came in the second half.
"Tonight was another impressive win in conference against a good opponent. Pleased for the team, a strong performance and most important a clean sheet. Now we shift our focus to ODU on Wednesday."
– FIU Head Coach Kevin Nylen
