FIU hadn't hosted an NCAA Soccer Tournament game in 13 years so the Panthers wasted no time letting everyone know how glad they were to be home again in the postseason.

FIU needed just 56 seconds to bring a raucous home crowd to its feet at the FIU Soccer Stadium.
The Panthers scored less than one minute into their game against Omaha and added another goal a little more than 24 minutes later to defeat the Mavericks 2-0 in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Soccer Tournament on Thursday night at FIU.
"Survive and advance," FIU coach
Kevin Nylen said. "I'm really proud of this group. Massive team effort tonight against a really good side in Omaha. They are well-coached and really difficult to break down. It was a back-and-forth game. Fortunately, we were on the right end of a couple of set pieces."
With the win, FIU (12-1-4) advances to the second round against Duke. Omaha, making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, finishes 10-6-3.
In 2004 was the last time FIU hosted an NCAA Tournament game. The Panthers were shut out by Central Florida that year. There would be no shutout of the Panthers this time around.
Fifty-six seconds into the match senior defender
Paul Marie perfectly set a free kick for
Deshawon Nembhard, who scored on a header from 18 yards out into the right corner of the net. It was the senior Nembhard's second goal of the season and second of his career. Marie recorded his fifth assist.
"It was big for us," said Nembhard of the 56-second goal. "It was the biggest crowd we had this season. They were really into it, like our fans have been all season. Scoring quickly helped with that, giving them a quick goal. It never really hurts to have a crowd that big."Â
In the 25
th minute, the French connection struck for the Panthers.
Marie, from Saint Aubindes Bois, France, knocked a free kick from the left side that swept across the pitch. There in front of the goal was
Jordan Machado, a Juvignac, France native, to head the ball into right lower corner of the goal past Omaha goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis. The goal was the third of the season for Machado.
FIU starting goalkeeper
Hugo Fauroux left the game 11 minutes in with an injury. He was replaced by
Daniel Gagliardi, who was tested early in the second half.
In one sequence Gagliardi made two saves. Shortly, thereafter the FIU defense helped Gagliardi stop another shot on goal. Gagliardi had seven saves in the game.
FIU next travels to Duke for its second round game. The Panthers take on the Blue Devils at 6 p.m. Sunday in Durham, North Carolina.
