The Basics                                  Â
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â FIU women's basketball tied its highest-scoring quarter, with 25 points in the first, but the Panthers could not knock down enough good looks in a 69-62 road loss at Howard Saturday afternoon from Burr Gym. FIU is now 2-6, while the Bison improve to 2-5.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Junior Kristian Hudson (Birmingham, Alabama) recorded her first double-double of the season by tying her career high with 10 assists. She scored 11 in the game.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â FIU took a few minutes to get going, but quickly put together a run of 11 points in three minutes, finishing with 25 first-quarter to tie for the highest-scoring period of the season. Howard scored 21 in a fast opening period.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The two teams were more defensive-minded in the second half. FIU hit just two field goal on .143 shooting, while the Bison hit only three on a .167 shooting period. The Panthers led 31-30 at the half.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The third period was like the first, with both teams scoring 18 points, but FIU was just 5-for-14 in the final period, including 0-for-6 from three-point range, while the Bison hit 7-for-8 from the free-throw line to ice the contest.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â FIU had a season-high 16 assists on 23 made baskets, but were outrebounded by 10 (48-38) in the contest. For the second time this season, FIU had two players record a double-double, as redshirt junior Kiandre'a Pound (Gifford, Florida / Sebastian River HS) had 11 points and 10 rebounds. It was her team-leading fourth double-double of the season.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â FIU had four double-digit performers, with freshman Callie Cavanaugh (Holyoke, Massachusetts) leading the way with 12 points and fellow freshman Shante Walker (West Park, Florida / South Broward HS) scoring 10. Â
Stat of the Match
The Panthers shot 16-for-34 (.471) in the first and third quarters, amassing 43 points, but were just 7-for-28 (.250), scoring only 19 points in the second and fourth quarters. Â
From the Sideline
"I didn't think we were very tough today," said FIU Head Coach Tiara Malcom. "We had a lot of opportunities to either create a second chance for ourselves or end their possessions, but we did not do that. When you are on the road, you have to be tough. We had our opportunities and created some great looks inside, especially in the second half, but did not convert them. I don't think we were consistent enough in that today and it all goes back to toughness."
