FIU Softball Downs Georgetown, 10-2, in 5 Innings

February 11, 2017 (Miami, Fla.) – The FIU softball team (3-1) defeated the Georgetown Hoyas (0-4) in a quick five innings, 10-2. The Panthers had two standouts, senior Stephanie Texeira (Miami, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) and junior transfer Kasandra Castle (Lake Worth, Fla / Palm Beach Central), who led the team with three RBI apiece.

FIU senior Ashley Leon (Miami, Fla. / Auburn) had the first hit for the Panthers with a single to second base. Following a Texeira walk, Castle doubled to right-center to bring Leon and Texeira home for the first two runs of the night.

In the bottom of the second, Georgetown pitcher Anna Brooks Pacha walked three Panthers to load the bases. Texeira reached on an error by the Hoyas first baseman, sending two Panthers home, followed by sophomore Jackie Schoff (Bradenton, Fla. /Lakewood Ranch) stealing home to give FIU a 5-0 lead. Castle then hit an RBI single up the middle to bring in Texeira to score. The Panthers led 6-0 in the bottom of the second.

Leading off the third inning, freshman Jessica Rivera (Miami, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) sent a homer over the left-field wall to put the score at 7-0.

Georgetown answered in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer over the left-field wall. Following the round-tripper, FIU sophomore Megan Kugelmann (Merritt Island, Fla. / Cocoa Beach) replaced junior Rachel Dwyer (Tampa, Fla / Chamberlain) in the circle.

In the bottom of the fifth, junior transfer Julia Gilbert (Rialto, Calif. / Etiwanda) led off with a single into left field, followed by senior Sammi Green (Marietta, Ga. / Lassiter) reaching first on a bunt single to the pitcher. Freshman Brianna Bahadue (Miami, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) moved the two runners up with a sac bunt. Leon sent an RBI double into right-center to score Gilbert, followed by a sacrifice fly by Texeira to score Green and advance Leon. Leon stole home to end the game 10-2.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow morning, February 12, to play the Memphis Tigers at 9:30 a.m. at Felsberg Field at the FIU Softball Stadium.
