MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (March 24, 2017) -- FIU freshman pitcher
Shannon Saile (Land O'Lakes, Florida / Land O'Lakes HS) extended two streaks Friday night, as the Panthers defeated Middle Tennessee 3-0 at the Blue Raider Softball Field to begin a Conference USA weekend series.
Â
Saile got the win to extend FIU to its program-record 14th-straight victory and she extended her personal streak to 25.1 innings without allowing an earned run in the complete-game, three-hit victory. It was her 10
th complete game of the year and fourth complete-game shutout. She scattered those three hits and three walks, striking out eight. She now has 125 strikeouts, 17
th-most in a single season at FIU. She improved her season mark to 9-5.
Â
FIU is now 28-6 overall, 4-0 in C-USA. The Blue Raiders drop to 10-15 on the season, 1-6 in conference.
Â
It was the first game all season in which FIU won without recording an RBI.
Â
FIU got a run without a hit in the first when sophomore center fielder and leadoff batter
Jackie Schoff (Bradenton, Florida / Lakewood Ranch HS) walked. She stole second and got to third on a flyout. After a walk to designated player
Kasandra Castle (Lake Worth, Florida / Palm Beach Central HS), the Panthers were able to pull off a double steal to push Schoff across before the inning ended.
Â
FIU added two more in the seventh inning on a two-base error with two outs and the bases loaded in the frame for insurance for Saile.
Â
Blue Raiders starter Cori Jenkins was tagged with eight hits and two walks in seven innings. Only one of the three runs was earned against her. She struck out six Panthers.
Â
Six Panthers had hits in the game, with senior second baseman
Ashley Leon (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep) and freshman shortstop
Jessica Rivera (Miami, Florida / Gulliver Prep) collecting the game-high two each. Three different Panthers scored. Schoff tied her career high with the two stolen bases; the fifth time she has accomplished that tally, all this season.
Â
The team will attempt a Saturday doubleheader Saturday, beginning at noon Eastern, weather permitting.
