SAN ANTONIO (April 8, 2017) -- A well-pitched game by FIU freshman
Shannon Saile (Land O'Lakes, Florida / Land O'Lakes HS) was overshadowed by a lack of run production as the Panthers were swept on the road at UTSA, dropping the second game of the doubleheader, 1-0, Saturday at Roadrunner Field. FIU is now 31-10 on the season, 7-4 in Conference USA. UTSA improves to 16-23, 6-8 in league play. Both losses for FIU were by one run.
The loss is the Panther's season-worst fourth in a row after a program-record 17-game winning streak which ended a week ago. Three of those four losses, including this one, came when the Panthers collected more hits than the opponent. The Panthers had been 28-0 when outhitting the opponent before these last four games.
The lone run in the contest was a leadoff homer in the second, when Bailee Baldwin hit a 1-2 pitch to left center to put UTSA up for good.
That was enough for UTSA starter Lizzy Fox to get her 10
th win of the season (10-12) after tossing a complete-game, five-hit shutout of FIU. Fox gave up just two walks and one hit batter. She struck out one and stranded six Panthers on base.
It was just the fourth time that FIU failed to score a run in the game, all with Saile as the starter. She has gotten only nine runs of support in her last five starts and six total runs of support in her seven season losses. Her ERA went down to 1.78 on the season after allowing just three hits and five walks. She tallied five strikeouts, all looking, but fell to 10-7 on the season. Saile now has 142 season strikeouts, three away from the 12
th-most in a single season at FIU.
Baldwin and FIU designated player
Kasandra Castle (Lake Worth, Florida / Palm Beach Central HS) tied for the game-high total of two hits. Castle's double was only the second extra-base hit of the doubleheader by the Panthers.
The two teams will conclude the series Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern as FIU attempts to salvage one win in the weekend.
