The Basics
  • The FIU women's soccer team got its first win of 2017 thanks to the first clean sheet for goalkeeper Nevena Stojakovic (Nis, Serbia) of the season in a 1-0 victory at Jacksonville Sunday. The senior now has nine shutouts to her career tally. FIU is now 1-4 on the season, with a pair of home contests schedule for next week.
  • FIU was credited with a season-high 15 shots in the contest.
  • Both teams came out in the match firing, totaling a combined 12 shots, including six shots on goal, in the first 20 minutes of action, but it was a shot from Panther forward Isabella de Almagro (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage) that led to the team's first goal of the season in the 24th minute of play. It was credited as an own goal when a Jacksonville defender deflected it in the net after it caromed the keeper Brittany Hundley.

From the Pitch
"It was nice to be leading in the game, but that doesn't mean it didn't bring pressure to maintain the lead an try to score more goals. We managed to get the win and deal with all of the pressure that Jacksonville brought."
"I made a run and got a nice ball from Paula (Quintero) in front of the goal and saw an opening on the right side of the net, so all I was thinking was to hit that far side. I took the shot and it bounced around off the goalie and a defender, but it still went in and I just felt relieved that ball hit the net. After that, I felt we relaxed a bit and played with more confidence in the attack. We were able to more opportunities on goal than ever before."
From the Bench
"We executed our gameplan very well and had some really good scoring chances, including a near goal that was saved off the back line from a Jacksonville defender. We started to fatigue in the second half and we let Jacksonville back in a little bit. We have some things we can build on from the first half. We did a better a job of possession and maintaining possession and moving quicker to the goal. We changed our formation this week in practice and that was a positive for us. Playing with the lead did not change our intensity level and we kept putting pressure on them. We need to further work on our attack and shore up some of the things on our defense. We are heading in the right direction, but we need to keep working on it. Hopefully this motivates us to keep working hard."
Stat of the Game
FIU had nine shots in the first half, the total of all of the first-half shots combined in the first four games.
