Florida Gulf Coast 2, FIU 1
FIU (4-6), Florida Gulf Coast (5-3-1)

Miami, Florida | FIU Soccer Stadium
Â
The Basics
- The Florida Gulf Coast men's soccer team scored two second half goals in the span of two minutes to hand FIU a tough 2-1 loss on Wednesday night at the FIU Soccer Stadium. The setback drops the Panthers to 4-6 on the year while the Eagles improve to 5-3-1.
Â
-
Santiago Patino (Orlando, Florida/Freedom) highlighted a well-played first half by FIU with the lone goal in the first 45 minutes of play. Patino attempted to make a play on the ball in the box and was taken down leading to a penalty kick in the 25' minute. For the second-straight match, Patino calmly stepped to the spot and fired the ball past the opposing goalkeeper, this time the Eagles' Gustavo Vasconcelos, to make the score 1-0, a score that would hold for the final 20 minutes of the first half. FIU went into the half leading in shots 13-7.
Â
- FGCU, however, struck in the second half with its first goal coming in the 65' minute when O'Vonte Mullings took a pass from Shak Adams and beat the Panthers keeper
Hugo Fauroux (
Cannes, France). Then, just two minutes later, Ryan Medilah sent a looping chip shot from 25 yards out that went over the head of Fauroux and found the back of the net for the winner.
Â
- The Panthers had various opportunities to even the match up, but none better than with 26 seconds left in the contest when
Andrew Booth sent a low laser from 20 yards out, on the right side, that went just inches wide of the net. That shot gave FGCU flashbacks of 2017 when the Panthers tied the match up with 25 seconds left and then defeated the Eagles, 4-3, in the 110' minute of double-overtime. Unfortunately, that would not be the case on Wednesday night.
Â
- FIU finished the night with a 20-17 shots advantage, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
