IRVING, Texas (Nov. 19, 2018) – As a result of racking up double-digit tackles for the sixth time this season, redshirt junior
Sage Lewis was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Lewis collected 11 total tackles against Charlotte on Saturday afternoon, but the Opa-Locka, Florida native's largest contribution came at the 5:33 mark in the opening frame when he picked up a fumble and raced 61 yards for a touchdown. The scoop and score turned out to be the difference in the offensive frenzy that saw FIU win 42-35 and was Lewis' first career trip to the end zone.
The linebacker has totaled 117 tackles this season and only needs three more tackles to break Keyon Bouie's program record of 119 tackles from the 2006 season. Lewis is tied for the conference lead in tackles and tackles per game averaging 10.6.
This is Lewis' first C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season. Lewis shared the honor with Marshall's Omari Cobb, while North Texas' DeAndre Torrey and Old Dominion's Isaiah Harper won the offensive and special team sides respectively.
FIU looks to clinch the East Division title this Saturday as the Panthers host Marshall on Nov. 24 at 12 p.m. ET. For those still wishing to purchase tickets, click
