2018 John Rennie Nike Invitational
Durham, North Carolina | Koskinen Stadium
Â
The Basics
- The No. 20-ranked FIU men's soccer team was hoping to break even and pull out a win over Elon on the second day of the 2018 John Rennie Nike Invitational, held at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, the Phoenix, however, had other plans, taking control in the second half en route to a 3-0 win over the Panthers. FIU drops to 0-2 on the year while Elon improves to 1-1.
Â
- The Phoenix held a 15-11 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal in the game. FIU goalkeeper,
Hugo Fauroux (Cannes, France), made four saves on the afternoon.
Â
-
Inigo Sagarduy (Miami, Florida/Belen Jesuit Prep) led FIU in shots with three, followed by
Santiago Patino (Orlando, Florida/ Freedom) with two shots,
Joris Ahlinvi (Bordeaux, France) with two shots (one of goal), and
Andrew Booth (Tamarac, Florida/University) with two shots (one of goal).
Â
- Although the first 45 minutes was physical, with a combined 16 fouls, it also proved to be relatively uneventful offensively. FIU came out aggressively holding a 4-0 shots advantage through the first 20 minutes of play, with Sagarduy recording all three of his shots, including one from five yards out that we just wide left of the net.
  Â
- After going shotless for the first 23 minutes of play, Elon eventually got going offensively, and broke through first in the 37' minute. The Panthers failed to clear a ball and the Phoenix' Valdi Jonsson took advantage beating Fauroux from 15 yards out and from the right corner of the box. FIU took a 1-0 deficit into the locker room at the break for the second-straight match.
Â
- In the second half, Booth had an early opportunity in the 49' minute, sending a laser from just outside the point of the box, just over the crossbar. FIU, however was not able to get much going during the second stanza.
Â
- Elon went up 2-0 on an FIU own goal in the 60' minute, and then got some insurance when Jimmy Contino took a cross from Marcel Fahrenholz and tapped into the back of the net from six-yards out in the 72' minute.
Â
Stat of the Game
- FIU started the game strong with four shots in the first 20 minutes of play, and held the Phoenix without a shot for the first 23 minutes of action. Elon, however, got on track and doubled up the Panthers in shots, 14-7, the rest of the way.
