The FIU Cross Country Teams are set to compete in the Mountain Dew Gator Invitational Saturday morning, hosted by the University of Florida at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
 
The FIU Women earned their first victory of the season last week at the UCF Alumni XC Invitational, led by Sherilene Gelderblom, who posted an individual first place finish with a time of 18:29.4, nine seconds ahead of the next runner.
 
The men were narrowly defeated for first place in a tiebreaker, but led by a third place finish from Eliseo Torres in the 8K in 28:42.2.
 
Last season at UF, the Panther women turned in an impressive second place finish out of 32 teams. Gelderblom finished second, running 17:21.2.
 
The men's 8K will begin at 7:55 am, with the women's 5K set to start at 8:30 am.
 
The Mountain Dew Invitational is annually one of the largest meets in the state, with programs from all over Florida competing. The loops around the Bostick Golf Course incorporate stretches of challenging hills, numerous paths with fans and spectators lining each side, and a final straightaway of roughly 100 meters to the finish line underneath the mossy oaks of the Gainesville course.
