FIU Caps Day One of ITA Southeast Regionals

Umarova and Akbas pick up doubles victory

TALLAHASSEE (Oct. 18, 2019) - A trio of Panthers closed out the opening day of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Friday afternoon, as the FIU women's tennis team continues fall play. 

FIU had three players pick up singles wins, while the tandem of Kamila Umarova and Basak Akbas won their lone doubles match of the day after taking down their foes, 8-3, to move on to the next round. 

Umarova won both matches on Friday, while Marina Alcaide and Akbas split singles play. Umarova downed Stetson's Brooke Milner, 6-1, 6-1, before later defeating No. 80 Daevenia Achong of Miami, 6-1, 6-4, in the round of 32. Alcaide defeated Florida State's ranked freshman Victoria Allen in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, for her first win, before falling in three sets in the round of 32. After dropping her opening match to UCF's Ksenia Kuznetsova in three sets, Akbas closed out the day with a win over Haleigh Porter of FAMU, 6-3, 6-2.
