Panthers Earn Runner-Up Finish at TYR Classic

FIU scored 449 points total to complete the two day event in second.

MIAMI (Oct. 5, 2019) - After a successful Saturday performance, the FIU swim and dive team capped the TYR Fall Classic with 449 points to earn a second-place finish.

"The team came out and looked sharp today. We were more aggressive and just competed better today. It was one of our goals to finish in the top two, so I am proud of the ladies," said Head Coach Randy Horner. 

FIU bettered two Power 5 foes, finishing ahead of TCU (Big 12) and Pittsburgh (ACC). The Horn Frogs and Panthers of Pitt finished third and fourth, respectively. 

The morning opened up with the Panthers placing second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.99 led by senior Julia Miranda, senior Taylor Grabenhorst, freshman Emily Cordovi and sophomore Helga Fodor. 

Junior Stephanie Hussey followed with the first victory of the day in the 500 free event when she swam a time of 4:57.22. Freshman Lamija Medosevic swam the B final of same event and ended third with a time of 5:08.19. 

The second win of the day was captured by Grabenhorst in the 200 breast with her time of 2:18.55 and freshman Delanie Goll competed in the B final and earned a third place finish with her time of 2:21.83.

In the 200 back, Miranda touched fourth during the A final with her time of 2:03.65 and sophomore Michaela Trnkova touched with a time of 2:06.03 and in the B final. In the 200 fly, Stephanie Hussey finished third with a time of 2:04.73 in the A final while Cordovi finished third in the B final after a time of 2:05.26.

Medosovic held down second place in the 100 free event A final with her time of 51.12 and Fodor took second in the B final with her time of 52.60. 

In the 200 IM event, Grabenhorst posted a number three finish with her time of 2:07.27 in the A final and freshman Eriana Temperino captured fourth place in the B final with her time of 2:09.14. 

Competition in the pool concluded after FIU nabbed second when the 400 free relay team of Medosevic, Fodor, Hussey and Miranda came in with a time of 3:27.69. 

From the springboard, sophomore Maha Gouda won the A final of the 1-meter event with her score of 286.45 and sophomore Rachel Foord won the B final with 270.30. 

UP NEXT
The Panthers will host the Blue & Gold Alumni Intrasquad Meet on Saturday, Oct. 12, before welcoming four squads to Biscayne Bay for Dual-A-Pool-Ooza on Oct. 18-19.
