WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Nov. 22, 2019) - After the second day of competition at the Purdue Invitational, the FIU swim and dive team finds themselves in second place with 402.5 points.
"Today was one of our best days ever at a mid-season meet," said head coach
Randy Horner. "We competed strong and got better and better as the night evolved."
FIU picked up 247 points to land in the number two spot after the second day of competition, besting Power 5 opponent Pittsburgh and host Purdue in the pool.
The Panther team of
Julia Miranda,
Sara Gyertyanffy,
Stephanie Hussey and
Lamija Medosevic worked to post a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:39.70.
In the 400 IM, Hussey was the second-place finisher in the B final (4:19.14), right before Miranda touched fifth in the 100 fly with her time of 54.42. Emily Codovi took first in the B Final (54.20),
Kasia Kolodziej placed second (54.27) and Gyertyanffy was the third place finisher in the same event with her time of 54.53.
Medosevic set a new FIU freshman record in the 200 free when she took second with a time of 1:47.30.
Taylor Grabenhorst and Gyertyanffy followed up with NCAA B standard qualifying times in the 100 breast. Gyertyanffy finished fourth in the A Final with her time of 1:01.32 and Grabenhorst snagged sixth in the same heat with her time of 1:01.69. Freshman
Delaine Goll won the B final of the same event when she touched at 1:02.20.
Miranda represented in the A Final of the 100 back and placed seventh with her swim of 54.92. In the B Final
Michaela Trnkova took first (55.27) and Cordovi was a second place finisher (55.31).
Rachel Foord dominated with 1-meter diving event when she scored 351.50 points to achieve a new FIU record and
Maha Gouda followed with a second place finish and 327.10 points, a new personal best for the sophomore.
Brittany Haskell was the winner of the B Final with her score of 288.00 and
Kaitlyn Fredericks landed in the number two spot with 278.95 points which qualifies as an NCAA Zone score.
The Panthers concluded the day in the pool with a second-place finish in the 800 free relay. The squad of Medosevic, Hussey, Miranda and Grabenhorst tapped at a time of 7:20.83 to achieve the runner up finish.
Day three of the Purdue Invitational will begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
