FIU Shines in APR Release

The Panthers had all 18 athletic programs post above the required multi-year score

MIAMI (May 28, 2019) – With the release of the NCAA's annual Academic Progress Rate (APR), FIU had all 18 athletic programs post above the required multi-year score of 930. Additionally, nine teams beat their sport's national average to further FIU's commitment to academic excellence.

"This year's APR report shows FIU's continued commitment to the academic success of our student-athletes," FIU Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia said. "I applaud the hard work of our coaches, SAAC staff and student athletes who have contributed to this achievement."

The 2019 report released by the NCAA features a four-year compilation of APR data from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years. The APR uses a series of formulas related to student-athlete retention and eligibility to measure the academic performances of all participants who receive grants-in-aid on every team at every NCAA Division I college and university.

Women's golf and women's cross country were recognized by the NCAA earlier this month for registering a perfect multi-year score of 1,000, ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport. It marked the fifth-straight year women's golf was recognized for its academic success.

Nine programs at FIU beat the national average in their respective sports for Division I teams, with baseball, men's basketball, men's cross country, football, men's soccer, beach volleyball, women's cross country, women's golf and softball bettering their peers. The baseball (24), football (23) and men's soccer (21) programs each finished a full 20 points or higher ahead of their sport's national average.

A total of seven teams improved their multi-year score with the baseball, men's basketball, men's cross country, football, men's soccer, beach volleyball, swimming and diving programs leading the way. The men's soccer program had the biggest jump, improving 18 points from last year. Six teams secured perfect single-year scores as well in 2017-18, with baseball, men's cross country, men's soccer, beach volleyball and women's cross country and women's golf nailing a 1,000.
