Panthers Earn Draw Versus UNF

The men's soccer team settled for a draw against the Ospreys after a double overtime battle

MIAMI (Sept. 17, 2019) - The FIU men's soccer team ended in a draw in their match against North Florida on Tuesday night, as the Panthers and Ospreys settled for a 1-1 draw after a double overtime clash at FIU Soccer Stadium.

FIU's record now stands at 4-0-2 on the season, while UNF shifts to 1-2-1.

The Panthers dominated possession early in the first period, as they remained patient with their passing and played keep-away from the Ospreys in an attempt to wear the defense down. FIU was able to get on the board first in the 32nd minute, as Xavi Olmos Ferris claimed his second goal of the season to put the Panthers up 1-0. Freshman Ronaldo Marshall notched the assist on the scoring play, marking the first of his Panther career.

UNF managed to equalize the score in the second period, as Zane Bubb found the back of the net in the 60th minute to even things up 1-1. FIU goalkeeper Daniel Gagliardi performed well and recorded three saves in the second period, as the Ospreys ramped up their attacking effort. The match remained tied after a full 90 minutes as neither squad was able to seize the lead, sending FIU to overtime for a second time this season.

After a stalemate in the first 10 minutes of overtime play, the match was extended to double overtime with the Panthers given a last opportunity to earn a win. FIU saw chances as they out-shot the Ospreys by a margin of 4-1 in the second overtime period, including a couple header attempts by Andrew Booth and Alessandro Campoy that missed just wide of the net. After 110 minutes of play, the final whistle blew and FIU was forced to settle for a draw, as they sent the Ospreys home without a victory of their own.

Olmos Ferris now has six points in 2019 after scoring against UNF, which is tied for third on the team with Booth. Marshall increases his point total to three after the newcomer logged his first FIU goal versus FAU last week. Campoy led the Panthers with three shots in the match.
