ATLANTA (Feb. 26, 2020) - The
FIU swimming and diving team opened day one of the Conference USA Championships with a pair of wins in the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay, giving the Panthers 80 points heading into Thursday.
The 200 medley relay was the first event of Wednesday, kicking off the four-day competition in Atlanta. FIU's
Julia Miranda,
Sara Gyertyanffy,
Kelsie Campbell and
Jasmine Nocentini completed the race with a time of 1:38.28, earning the first gold medal of the week. In the B final of the same race, the Panther squad of
Ann Barral,
Victoria Cantu,
Melannie Vargas and
Alexa Bryant were first to finish with a time of 1:43.59.
The 800 free relay was next to take off, led by
Lamija Medosevic in the A final followed by
Jasmine Nocentini,
Stephanie Hussey and
Taylor Grabenhorst, who tapped first with a time of 7:09.31 for the second gold medal of the day. Medosevic's lead-off time of 1:46.80 set a new FIU freshman record and was the third-fastest 200 free time in FIU history.
Gyertyanffy also completed a time trial for the 100 breast where she earned an NCAA B cut and set a school record with her time of 1:00.44.
