Panthers Hang On to First After Day Two

FIU leads the pack by 44.5 points

ATLANTA (Feb. 27, 2020) - The FIU swimming and diving team continues to lead through the second day of competition at the Conference USA Championships, with the Panthers posting 337 points.

FIU holds a 44.5-point lead over competition as the Panthers head into day three action on Friday. 

The 500 free event was first on deck during the finals session of the evening. Stephanie Hussey swam a lifetime best in the A final and captured silver after clocking in at 4:49.78. Rachel Whitaker swam in the B final of the same race and placed 15th overall with a time of 5:03.30. 

FIU had five Panthers swim the 200 IM, as Taylor Grabenhorst won bronze in the A final with a lifetime best of 2:00.61. Delaine Goll, who also swam in the A final, placed seventh after earning a lifetime-best time of 2:02.82. Eriana Temperino won the B final of the 200 IM, with a top time of 2:03.40 to continue the Panthers momentum on Thursday night.

The Panthers won their next gold medal in the 50 free, with Jasmine Nocentini gracing the podium after tapping with an NCAA B standard time of 22.23, which also marks as a lifetime-best for the rookie. Teammate Lamija Medosevic placed third to capture the bronze after her time of 22.70. Medosevic's time is another best and qualifies her for the NCAA B Standard cut, while Paloma Sanchez earned sixth with her time of 23.24.

Helga Fodor captured gold in the B final of the 50 free, swimming a lifetime-best time of 23.22. Kasia Kolodziej also achieved a lifetime-best when she tapped fifth after clocking a time of 23.70.

FIU swept the dive portion of the evening, with Mandy Song scoring a 363.05 in the 3-meter to win gold. Maha Gouda followed with silver after a score of 344.10, while Rachel Foord earned bronze with her score of 317.90. The Panthers also captured fourth and fifth as well in the event after Brittany Haskell scored a 285.10 and Brooke Bouchard earned a 284.00.

The Panthers closed out the night with a win in the 200 free relay, after the Panther squad of Nocentini, Fodor, Medosevic and Sanchez earned gold with a time of 1:30.23.
