Panthers Take 126-Point Lead After Day Three

FIU sits in first place with 712.5 points

ATLANTA (Feb. 28, 2020) - The FIU swimming and diving team dominated on day three of the Conference USA Championships, as the Panthers head into the final day of competition with 712.5 points.

FIU is ahead of second-place Rice, who has 586.5 points, while FAU is in third with 295 points. 

Stephanie Hussey opened the evening activities with a win in the 400 IM, after clocking in with a time of 4:16.30 in the A final. The time qualifies her for the NCAA B standard cut. 

FIU went on to medal in the 100 fly, with Julia Miranda taking silver after a time of 53.87 in the A final. The time ranks as the fifth-fastest in school history. Sara Gyertyanffy won bronze after tapping third with a time of 53.97, which ranked as the seventh-fastest time in school history. Kasia Kolodziej was fourth to finish the race and posted a time of 54.14, which was the eighth-best time in program history. 

In the 200 free, Lamija Medosevic finished second after a time of 1:48.05 in the A final. Jasmine Nocentini took home the bronze medal in the same event after tapping at 1:48.19, which ranked as a lifetime-best for the freshman and stands as the seventh-best in school history. 

The Panthers swept the 100 breast A final to continue the night, as Gyertyanffy tapped first at 1:00.77 and qualified for the NCAA B standard. Taylor Grabenhorst swam a lifetime-best of 1:00.93, which ranks as the third-fastest time in school history and also qualifies her for the NCAA B standard cut. Delaine Goll chased for third as she captured bronze and earned an NCAA B standard cut time of 1:00.99, which also ranks fourth-fastest in school history. 

Michaela Trnkova dominated in the 100 back A final, after capturing gold with a lifetime-best of 53.82 in the event. The time ranks as the fourth-best in school history and qualifies her for the NCAA B standard cut. Miranda took the silver after posting a time of 54.02 in the 100 back, which was also the fourth-fastest time in program history and was a new personal-best mark. 

Mandy Song posted a meet record score of 334.45 in the preliminary rounds of the 1-meter springboard, as the rookie went on to seal the gold medal in following round with a score of 326.25. Rachel Foord followed up with a bronze medal after scoring 293.65, while Maha Gouda finished fourth with a score of 292.00.

The Panthers concluded the evening with a gold medal in the 400 medley relay, as Trnkova, Grabenhorst, Miranda and Medosevic tapped at 3:37.62 for the win.
