MIAMI (May 14, 2020) - This week we preview FIU's quarterbacks as we look ahead to the upcoming season.

POSITION BREAKDOWN
Position: Quarterbacks
Position Coach: Rich Skrosky
Key Returner: Kaylan Wiggins

PLAYER TO WATCH
Kaylan Wiggins got his first action on the field for FIU in 2019, as the quarterback started in one game and made 10 appearances. Wiggins had a breakout performance in the win over New Hampshire, as he rushed for 187 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The 187 yards ranks as the fourth-most rushing yards in a single game all-time in C-USA history for a quarterback.

QUOTES FROM KAYLAN WIGGINS
Wiggins on Goals for 2020: "My goals for 2020 are to improve as a player and a leader, and show the program that I am able to lead. The team goals for 2020 are to win a conference championship and win a bowl game."

Wiggins on James Morgan: "What I took from James was the hours he put into the film room. He showed me how to break down film and look at defenses differently. It was a tough competition as James was a very experienced QB and was a great player. He has a strong arm, very accurate and was a good decision-maker, which he will take with him to the league and be very successful. James is a great overall person as well and I'm glad I had the chance to learn from him and have him as a teammate and brother."

Wiggins on Coach Rich Skrosky: "He is a great coach, as you can see from the work he did with Alex McGough and James Morgan. He knows the ins and outs of football and his ability to coach and improve a quarterback is tremendous. I've learned a lot from Coach Skrosky and I still have two years left with him to improve and grow more as a player. I'm grateful that I'm able to learn from such a great coach."

QUOTES FROM COACH RICH SKROSKY
Skrosky on Goals for 2020: "From a QB standpoint, our goals don't change. We want to improve every day in every manner of our play from the mental aspect to the way we study film and see the offense and defense. Although we've had a tough situation working remotely, our guys have handled it well. We've had several zoom meetings and it's been very interactive. I have to admit that my expectations weren't high with the remote work challenge, but our guys have been great. We've spent more time on details and watching film than we would have ever done normally during this time of year. The negative is obviously not having that human interaction, they don't have their teammates around, so it's tough to work and concentrate on mechanics."

Skrosky on Replacing James Morgan: "James has meant so much to this program and we're so happy for all of his success. When Alex McGough graduated two years ago, the same question came up about how we replace him and I don't know if all of us would've thought James Morgan would be a fourth-round draft pick after his first game against Indiana. It takes time and you have to be patient with the process. The biggest difference this time is that we had Christian Alexander and James Morgan competing, so we had a two-man competition. The hard part this year will be that it will be a truly open competition and not having the spring practices will make it more challenging. We'll get reps in the fall camp whenever that takes place, but you don't want to rush and make a bad decision, so however long that takes it takes. James will be hard to replace and we're going to miss him, but I hope all of the guys under him last season really watched the way he studied and prepared for every game so that has an impact on our room this season."

Skrosky on Kaylan Wiggins: "It was huge for Kaylan to step in against New Hampshire last season and play a very solid game. He had other huge drives as well later in the season and gave our team a lot of energy against Marshall. That's a big factor because you can't replicate in-game experience. The thing Kaylan did so well last season was making big plays, the thing he needs to improve on is being much more consistent in both his decision making and the execution of the set play. That's the one thing that you watch him on film from 2019 and notice that his decision making needs to be a little better."

Skrosky on Other Returnees: "Caleb Lynum really does some things in the weight room and the practice field where people just look at each other and say wow. Going back to his high school days he was always the biggest, fastest and strongest on the field, so he's working on not relying so much on his talent. Stone Norton has a great work ethic and a composure about him where he never gets rattled. He's as bright at understanding the game of football that I've seen. He's got a good arm and is a sneaky good athlete."

Skrosky on Incoming Freshman Haden Carlson: "Haden Carlson has shown a lot of talent and we identified it early on in his high school career. He has a good size and good build, with a great arm and is very talented. He led his high school team to the furthest they've ever been in the state playoffs and honestly he shows a great competitiveness on the field. He has a moxy and competitiveness about him that's really special and we're very excited about him joining the group."
