MIAMI (Jan. 16, 2021) – The FIU women's swimming and diving team is ready to resume the 2020-21 campaign, as the Panther divers open up the Spring slate of competition with a battle against the Florida Gators and the Miami Hurricanes in Gainesville this Sunday, Jan. 17.
Sunday's competition will consist of three events at the O'Connell Center Pool, starting with the 3-meter dive at 11 a.m. ET, followed by both the 1-meter springboard and platform events at 1 p.m. ET.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Both Miami and Florida have gotten off to 2-1 starts this season, with the two programs clashing in a meet back on Nov. 5 in Gainesville. Miami sophomore Mia Vallee took first-place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events for the day, with Ashley McCool of Florida taking third-place in both events. Florida junior Elizabeth Perez took second-place in the 3-meter, while Miami junior Millie Haffety took second in the 1-meter.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Last time the Panthers faced the Gators was in last season's opener on Sept. 26, 2019, with
Maha Gouda (297.23) and
Rachel Foord (276.45) taking first and third-place in the 3-meter event, respectively. Gouda and Foord also notched second and third-place in the 1-meter dive with scores of 293.33 and 284.25, respectively.
The Panthers last faced the Hurricanes during the 2019 Dual-a-pool-ooza event at the Biscayne Bay Acquatic Center on Nov. 1-2, as Gouda took first-place in the 1-meter (293.35) and the platform (241.65). Foord secured first-place in the 3-meter (330.30) and third-place in the platform event (231.20).
UP NEXT
After having their initial season opener against Miami canceled back on Nov. 9 due to inclement weather, the Panthers are scheduled to make up the contest on Friday, Jan. 22 in Coral Gables at 3 p.m. ET, as the swimmers hit the pool for the first time in 2021.
