MIAMI (Oct. 19, 2021) – Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro of the FIU men's soccer team has been named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
The honor marks the first for freshman Dos Santos Monteiro and the fourth C-USA weekly award for FIU this season.
Defenders
Kareem Riley (Oct. 5),
Philip Hildebrandt (Aug. 31), and
David Garcia (Sept. 7) have all earned Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.
Dos Santos Monteiro logged three points in FIU's 4-1 road victory over South Carolina last Saturday (Oct. 16), including a goal and an assist, while logging three shot attempts in 68 minutes of action.
With FIU down by a score in the 34th minute, Dos Santos Monteiro made a Gamecock defender miss inside the box and fired an excellent strike past the keeper for FIU's equalizing goal. Just after halftime, the freshman from Portugal created another scoring opportunity to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead. Dos Santos Monteiro drew two defenders as he drove into the attacking third, then sent a well-timed pass into the box for Rasmus Tobinksi, who found an easy score on a one-on-one situation with the keeper.
Dos Santos Monteiro is currently tied for the team-lead in goals scored (6), while ranking second in points (13) and shot attempts (27). The Panther midfielder also leads all FIU attacking players with 706 minutes played.
