Swim & Dive Breaks Third Record; Finishes Second Overall at TYR Fall Classic

Panthers best two Power 5 programs and break BBC pool record in 400 freestyle relay

MIAMI (Oct. 9, 2021) – The FIU women's swimming and diving team capped the annual TYR Fall Classic with a strong showing on Day Two of the meet, as the Panthers broke another pool record and finished in second place with an overall score of 476 points.
 
FIU won a total of three events on the day and secured six top-three finishes, while winning a total of eight different heats.
 
The Blue & Gold finished behind only FSU in the standings, as the Seminoles secured first-place with a score of 505. FIU bested two Power 5 foes in the meet, finishing ahead of ACC program Pitt (482; 3rd) and BIG 12 opponent TCU (422.50; 4th). Missouri State (361; 5th), FAU (346; 6th), Lynn (274; 7th), and Keiser (249.50; 8th) rounded out the standings.
 
FIU broke a Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center record for the third time in the TYR Fall Classic, after the Panthers shattered marks in the 400-yard medley relay (3:42.66) and the 400 individual medley (4:15.70) on Day One of the meet.
 
The Panther group of Stephanie Hussey, Lamija Medosevic, Christie Chue, and Elinah Phillip shattered the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center record in the 400 freestyle relay with an impressive time of 3:24.51.
 
Hussey continued her fantastic start to the 2021-22 campaign, as the Panther participated in all events in which FIU broke a record. In the 500 freestyle, Hussey nabbed first-place with a time of 4:58.30, while the Panther finished third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:03.38.
 
On the diving side, the duo of Mandy Song and Maha Gouda dominated the 1-meter event with top scores of 323.45 and 318.30, respectively. Song won the A Final on the day, while Gouda took first in the B Final. Both Panthers posted zone qualifying scores in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives over the weekend.
 
The Panther group of Julia Miranda, Sarah Gyertyanffy, Kelsie Campbell, and Phillip slotted in at second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:42.85 to open up Day Two.
 
Christie Chue grabbed second-place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:15.30 and missed first place by only .01 seconds. Delaine Goll claimed fourth in the B Final with a time of 2:22.34.
 
In the 200-yard backstroke, Miranda finished fifth with a time of 2:03.74 in the A Final, while Campbell placed fourth in the B Final with a mark of 2:05.22.
 
Miranda also notched fifth place in the 200-yard individual medley as the Panther raced a time of 2:08.29. Gyertyanffy won the B Final with an excellent mark of 2:05.55.
 
Chue took fifth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.28, while Medosevic finished third in the B Final with a mark 52.42.
 
Mia Zahab posted a time of 5:18.56 in the 500 free B Final and a mark of 2:09.98 in the 200 butterfly B Final.
 
UP NEXT
FIU will have three weeks to prepare before making the short trip to Fort Lauderdale for a dual-meet against Nova Southeastern on Saturday, Oct. 30. The start time for the contest will be announced closer to the meet date.
