FIU Hoops Runs Win Streak to Four With 74-71 Overtime Win Over UNC Greensboro

Panthers outscore Spartans 9-6 in extra time to go a perfect 3-0 at Jersey Mike’s Classic

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The FIU men's basketball team outlasted UNC Greensboro for a 74-71 overtime win in its final game of the Jersey Mikes Classic on Sunday evening.
 
The win marked the fourth straight for the Panthers and allowed them to finish a perfect 3-0 during this week's Jersey Mike's Classic in St. Petersburg.  FIU ran off three wins in the last four days over Ball State, Green Bay and UNC Greensboro.
 
FIU outscored the Spartans 9-6 in overtime after the two teams finished regulation deadlocked at 65-65. 
 
Junior Tevin Brewer scored five of the Panthers' nine points in the extra session, including a clutch three-pointer that gave FIU the lead for good at 70-67 with 3:28 left.  He added a pair of free throws to put FIU up by three with 17 ticks remaining.
 
Brewer finished the contest with 14 points and was named to the Jersey Mike's All-Tournament Team after averaging 18.3 points over the Panthers three victories this week.
 
Joining Brewer in double-figures was Clevon Brown, who finished with a team-high 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field.  He also recorded five rebounds and four blocks.  Javaunte Hawkins notched 15 and connected on 5-of-8 three-point attempts.  Denver Jones also added 14 points and six assists in the win.
 
The game featured eight ties and 14 lead changes – the majority of the which came in the second half and overtime.
 
UNCG used a 15-1 run midway through the first half to open a 10-point at 29-19 with 5:39 left before intermission.
 
The Panthers responded with an 8-0 push to close the half to send the teams into the locker room with FIU trailing by just a 37-36 margin.
 
FIU kept on the attack to start the second half as it opened with 10 consecutive points to open a six-point lead at 14:37 of the second – its largest of the contest.
 
For the game, the Panthers shot a solid 46 percent from the field, including a 39 percent clip from three-point range (13-of-33).   
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers return home for the first contest of a four-game homestand on Wednesday, Nov. 24 vs. North Dakota.
 
Tip off is slated for a special 11 a.m. ET matinee start time from the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
