Cuenca Takes Silver, Miller Bronze on Day 1 of C-USA Indoor

Panthers stand in sixth heading into final day

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Feb. 20, 2021) - Maika Cuenca's silver medal in the pentathlon and Filippa Miller's bronze in the pole vault highlighted day one of the Conference USA Indoor Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex. 

Cuenca scored 3,581 points in the pentathlon, a school record, to take second place. Miller, who recently set the school record in the pole vault for the second time this season, placed third in the pole vault with a jump of 3.86m to earn third. 

Multiple Panthers qualified for Sunday's finals with impressive performances in the preliminaries. Kiera Forde-Richards will compete in the finals of the 200m after placing sixth in the heats. Daira Deicmane's 2:15.77 in the 800 advanced the junior through to Sunday's finals. Distance runner Rahel Gebretsadik just nabbed the final qualifying spot in the mile, placing 10th with a time of 5:07. 

Harrison Mancke and Michaelle Valentin also picked up five points for the Panthers in the weight throw, placing in sixth and seventh respectively.
