MIAMI (March 2, 2021) - Randy Horner's squad won its seventh-straight Conference USA title over the weekend, as the spring slate continues for FIU Athletics.
FIU had six other programs in action last week as well. Below is a recap of how each sport fared this past week.
Swimming & Diving
The FIU swimming & diving team continued its impressive C-USA title streak as the Panthers won their seventh-consecutive league championship over the weekend. The Panthers were led by
Jasmine Nocentini who won six gold medals and was named the C-USA Swimmer of the Meet, while
Maha Gouda won three golds and was named the C-USA Diver of the Meet for the second time in three years.
Randy Horner and
Nick Yang swept the coaching honors as Horner was named C-USA Swimming Coach of the Year and Yang was tabbed as the C-USA Diving Coach of the Year.
Women's Basketball
The FIU women's basketball team split its C-USA series against WKU over the weekend, with Saturday's win over the Hilltoppers being the first for the program since 2013.
Jiselle Thomas averaged 23 points in the two contests to lead FIU, while
Emerald Ekpiteta was a rebound shy of earning back-to-back double-doubles against WKU. The Panthers will host Florida Memorial at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, to conclude the regular season before heading to Frisco, Texas for the C-USA Basketball Championships next week.
Baseball
The FIU baseball team split its series against the visiting Miami (OH) RedHawks.
Tyler Myrick and
Garrett Rukes combined for 19 strikeouts on Friday night to highlight FIU's performance on the weekend. The Panthers will cap their 10-game homestand this weekend as Indiana State visits for a three-game series on March 5-7.
Softball
The Panthers capped its weekend in Clermont with an 11-5 win over New Mexico State, after bouncing back from losses on Friday and Saturday.
Venessa Gallegos hit her second home run of the year, which came in the narrow defeat to No. 12 Kentucky. The Panthers travel to Boca Raton this weekend to continue their road swing, FIU will face off against Illinois State, Pittsburgh and Coastal Carolina in the FAU Invitational.
Beach Volleyball
The FIU beach volleyball team defeated Florida Memorial to open its season at home last Thursday, before downing No. 11 Stetson to highlight its play in DeLand, Florida over the weekend. The pair of
Gina Lipscomb and
Lina Bernier went 5-1 last week to help the Panther cause. FIU travels to Fort Worth, Texas this weekend as the Panthers take part in the TCU Horned Frog Challenge. FIU will face UAB, Southern Miss, Central Arkansas and host-TCU.
Men's Basketball
The FIU men's basketball team dropped its road series to C-USA leader WKU to conclude the regular-season slate.
Radshad Davis earned his third double-double of the season in Monday's series finale, after scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The Panthers will now get set to travel to Frisco, Texas for the C-USA Basketball Championships next week.
Men's Soccer
FIU dominated Fort Lauderdale on Monday afternoon, as the Panthers blanked the Eagles 5-0.
Alessandro Campoy led the Panthers with a pair of goals on Monday. FIU will open C-USA play this Saturday, as the Panthers welcome the FAU Owls to Miami. First kick is slated for Noon.
