FRANKFORT, Kentucky (March 20, 2021) – Powered by a 28-point performance from
Fujika Nimmo, the FIU women's basketball team pounced on the Abilene Christian Wildcats by a score of 78-61 in the second game of the Women's Basketball Invitational on Saturday night.
The Panthers now advance to the consolation bracket title game on Sunday and will face Manhattan at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Nimmo's 28 points on Saturday night tied her career-high, with the Panther scoring 17 in the first half alone.
Jiselle Thomas and
Kyla Nelson joined Nimmo in double-figures with Thomas scoring 14 and Nelson adding 13 more.
Alexus Wykoff led all Panthers on the boards with eight rebounds.
FIU took control of Saturday's game with a 20-5 run midway through the second quarter and never looked back as the Panthers ballooned their lead to 24 points on two separate occasions in the second half. Overall, FIU trailed for just 1:43 of Saturday's contest.
Saturday's win was the first postseason victory for the program since downing Stetson in the 2012 WNIT. The 78 points scored also mark the most in program history since tallying 83 against Miami (FL) in the 2006 WNIT.
UP NEXT
FIU will take on the Manhattan Jaspers on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET in the consolation bracket title game. The Panthers and Jaspers have faced off just once on the hardwood, coming way back in 1989. FIU won the late-November contest 69-54.
