MIAMI (March 9, 2021) – Goalkeeper
Johan Peñaranda of FIU men's soccer has been named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The award marks the first for Peñaranda as a Panther, and the second consecutive league honor for FIU, after
Alessandro Campoy won Offensive Player of the Week on March 2.
Peñaranda recorded six saves and posted a clean sheet in FIU's 2-0 victory over rival FIU on Saturday, March 6. The keeper faced 13 shots from the Owls and played a full 90-minutes in goal making clutch saves in both periods. Peñaranda successfully stopped an FAU penalty kick that would have equalized the score at 1-1 just before halftime. After recording three saves in the opening half, Peñaranda logged three more in the closing half and shut down multiple dangerous chances on the Panther net.

FIU will hit the road for the first time in 2021 to face its toughest test yet, when the Panthers travel to battle reigning C-USA champion Marshall on Saturday, March 13. First kick against the Thundering Herd is slated for Noon from Huntington, West Virginia.
