CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (April 18, 2021) - Behind
Venessa Gallegos' big day at the plate, the FIU softball team defeated Charlotte 11-8 on the road to take Sunday's series finale.
Gallegos, who was a double shy of hitting for the cycle, racked up seven RBI on Sunday. The second baseman earned a homer and triple on Sunday to go along with her three-hit afternoon.
Freshman
Bailey Grossenbacher also homered on Sunday, which was the first of her collegiate career.
Alexis Ross racked up four hits in the lead-off spot, while
Gaby Ruiz earned three.
With the score knotted at 1-1, FIU scored six unanswered after three-run innings in the third and fifth to go up 7-1. Gallegos lifted a three-run homer in the sixth inning to push the lead, as the Panthers held off a 49er rally and earned an 11-8 victory.
The win for FIU snapped a five-game winning streak for Charlotte.
UP NEXT
FIU will finally return to Felsberg Field on April 23-25 as the Panthers host Marshall for a weekend series. FIU concludes the home slate the following weekend against WKU on April 30-May 2.
